Beginners Swing Day on Saturday of Camp Jitterbug!
Spread the word to all of your friends who don't dance YET! We are welcoming beginners to Camp Jitterbug for a full day of Beginner friendly classes and their pass includes a ticket to the Jump Session Show and the Saturday evening dances. Beginner classes will be located at the Broadway Performance Hall building at 1625 Broadway Ave.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 2023

SOLO CLASSES
BLACK BOTTOM W/CHESTER & MORGAN

Originating out of New Orleans, The Black Bottom is a fast dance which became popular during 1920s amid the Jazz Age. It was danced solo or by couples. Originating among African Americans in the rural South, the black bottom eventually spread to mainstream American culture and became a national craze in the 1920s, overtaking the popularity of the Charleston. This is a unique opportunity to learn the history and authentic form of this dance by Chester & Morgan who have studied it immensely.
INTRO TO HIP HOP W/KEVIN

This is a great opportunity to learn a mini Hip Hop Routine with Kevin Harris before the Sunday night dance. 

BOP  
This is a great opportunity to learn Bop which started in the mid 1940's and evolved out of the Swing era.

THE EVOLUTION OF VERNACULAR JAZZ

Learn the evolution and influences of Vernacular Jazz to Tap to Hip Hop and everything in between. Understanding the roots and evolution of Vernacular Jazz is essential to the growth and future evolution of the art form.

HIP HOP MOVEMENT

Learn from Kevin who is one of the top Hip Hop dancers and trainers. This will be a great class to learn and practice movement that will carry over into all of your dancing.

HIP HOP ROUTINE

Learn a high energy Hip Hop routine with one of the country’s best Hip Hop dancers, Kevin Harris.

FINDING YOUR GROOVE

Join Nika & Rachel to explore finding your groove in solo dancing and incorporating your whole body in your movements to create a dynamic style.

ANYBODY CAN TAP
No Tap shoes required. Jovon will show you that anybody can learn how to count, shuffle, groove and move to whatever beat you want with your feet.

ELEMENTS OF IMPROVISATION AND MUSICALITY

Learn the intricacies and the qualities of music and how to apply them in your improvisation while also learning adaptations to old and new movements and variations without restricting the art form.
SOUL TRAIN
Join Chester & Rachel in this fun and high energy Soul Train class. Chester, who was once on the show Soul Train, will get you ready for the Soul Party!

BALBOA & SHAG CLASSES
BEGINNING SHAG
This is a quick refresher on the Shag basics before the Friday night dance with Jeron & Laura.
ST LOUIS SHAG
Learn the basics of St Louis Shag, which evolved from Lindy Hop, Shag and Charleston.

HAL, BETTY & MARGE TAKIER INSPIRED MOVEMENT
Learn some awesome stylings, footwork and movements that have been inspired by these legends of Bal Swing.
MUSI-BAL-ITY
Bring your Balboa to the next level by incorporating musicality and rhythms into your movements and footwork.

SHAG ESSENTIALS
Learn and refresh the fundamentals of Shag footwork and lead/follow.
SHAG FOOTWORK AND STYLING
Learn some fun variations, footwork and style  to add to your Shag repertoire.

 

 

LINDY HOP & BLUES ELECTIVES
*ALL TRACK CLASSES WILL BE LINDY HOP AND ARE NOT TITLED. THIS ALLOWS THE INSTRUCTORS TO PROVIDE  CONTENT TO EACH CLASS INDIVIDUALLY BASED ON WHAT THEY NEED.
FIRST STOPS
Learn First Stops from Harvest Moon Ball legend, Sugar Sullivan, who used First Stops routine in competition. Chester and Nika will help guide you through the moves as Sugar teaches.
SOFT SHOE RHYTHMS FOR LINDY 
Learn how to incorporate different soft shoe rhythms and inspirations into your Lindy Hop and footwork.

FANCY FOOTWORK

Learn some fun and fancy footwork variations to spice up your Lindy Hop with style.
LEADS AND FOLLOWS SPINS & TURNS
Open to everyone, this class will teach you some creative and eye catching spins and turns to incorporate into your dancing.

HIDDEN TREASURES

Did you know that when the Lindy hop was new there were hundreds of other ‘hop’ dances happening around the same time? This class is all about diving back even further in time and finding inspiration in unexpected places.

THINKING INSIDE THE BOX
This class will challenge you to think differently about what dancing is and let creativity sneak up on you and your partner.

OLD MOVIE MOVES
Let inspiration from some of the old movies of the original dancers build repertoire and style into your dancing.
JUKE JOINT BLUES
Featured in Tyler Perry's "A Jazz Man's Blues", Chester & Morgan will teach partnered Blues dancing  inspired from  the Juke Joint parties that came out of the South during the Jazz Age.
